The academician Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akgündüz, known in Turkey as a conservative, has sentenced the arch-enemy of the Erdogan government, The Sympathising of the Gülen Movement, to death. In a broadcast on the radical Islamic “Akit TV” he pointed to the Gülen movement and said: “This movement has rebelled against the state. Its position in Islam is clear. They may be killed.” The inhuman remarks of this legal historian, who is the rector of the Islamic University of Rotterdam and who serves the mouth of the fanatical Nazis in the Third Reich, surprised everyone. It is expected that academics of his degree will make a jurisprudential statement and not imitate a mafia boss.
The past is overflowing with examples of fatal consequences in which academics were subject to politicians or gained advantages through politics. The number of academics under National Socialism who supported National Socialism and served as ideologues should not be underestimated. Among these academics was Martin Heidegger, one of the most renowned academics of the 20th century, who had taken on administrative tasks at universities and by virtue of this office had not shied away from even eliminating his own supporters. There were very prominent academics, such as the Nobel laureate in physics, Philipp Lenard, or Alfred Rosenberg, who was sentenced to death as a defendant in the Nuremberg Trials. Their numbers should not be underestimated. It is obvious that Turkey is experiencing the Nazi Germany of the 1930s today. With their attitudes, many academics were and are accomplices of the Erdogan regime.
